This page explains how Funda reviews what is posted, what can happen to content or to an account, and how to appeal a decision.
1. What we look for
Moderation applies the community rules, starting with the first one: report a fact, not a person. Above all, it looks for what can harm someone: a name together with an accusation, a phone number, an address, a license plate, a face, an image of a victim.
An accusation of witchcraft aimed at a named person is treated as one of the most serious violations: it can lead to real violence, especially against children and older people.
Moderation is not a way to say "I disagree". If a fact seems outdated or false to you and you are on site, say so with the "gone" confirmation. The "False information" reason exists for an invented fact, not for a disagreement.
2. Before sending: blurring on your phone
- On iPhone, the app looks for faces and license plates in the photo and blurs them automatically, on the phone, before anything is sent. No unblurred image is sent to a third-party service for this detection.
- On Android, detection uses the phone's Google Play services. If they are missing, or if detection fails, you blur the areas to hide yourself.
- In both cases, the blur is written into the image: it cannot be removed afterwards.
- The photo's metadata is removed.
Photos received through WhatsApp do not go through this blurring. They remain private and are reviewed by the Funda team before any use.
3. When posting: the automatic check
Every text posted is checked automatically. The check looks for what the rules forbid: phone numbers, strings of digits that could serve as an identifier, and a name associated with an accusation.
- If there is strong doubt, the content may be hidden pending human review.
- If there is moderate doubt, the content stays online and goes to human review.
- The machine never decides alone: a case opened by the check stays open until a person reads it.
Each automatic decision is logged in the same way as a human decision, so that it can be explained and appealed.
4. Flags from users
You can flag content for one of these reasons:
- targets a person (name, plate, face, accusation);
- personal data posted;
- violent or shocking content;
- false information;
- spam;
- other.
For serious reasons (targets a person, personal data, violent content), the content may be temporarily hidden when several different people flag it. A single person cannot have content hidden, except for the reason "Abuse of a minor": a single flag is then enough to hide the content immediately, and it is reviewed as a priority, within the hour. Other reasons lead to a review, without precautionary hiding.
5. What is always reviewed by a person
- Missing persons, persons found and assaults are always reviewed by the Funda team before any sharing. They never become automatic area alerts.
- Sightings on a missing person notice ("I saw them") go to Funda. Only Funda passes information on to families, with a text reviewed, and sometimes rewritten, by the team.
6. What can happen to content
| Decision | Effect |
|---|---|
| Precautionary hiding | The content is hidden pending review |
| Flagged for review | The content stays online, a person will review it |
| Correction request | The content stays online, the author is invited to correct it |
| Removal | The content is removed |
| Reinstatement | Error acknowledged: the content comes back exactly as it was |
| No action | Nothing wrong: the content is left untouched |
7. What can happen to an account
Sanctions are progressive. What is sanctioned is repetition.
| Level | Effect | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Warning | Notified, no technical effect | |
| Read-only | You can no longer post | 24 hours |
| Suspension | You can no longer post | 7 days |
| Ban | The account is closed | Permanent |
- A first ordinary violation results in a warning, the next one in read-only mode, then a suspension, then a ban.
- A serious violation (targeting a person, posting personal data, violent content) results directly in a suspension, then a ban if it happens again.
- Child sexual abuse or exploitation content leads to a ban: see the "Child protection" page.
- A sanction lifted after an appeal does not count towards the progression.
- During a read-only period or a suspension, you can still view the map and receive alerts. Being deprived of a fire alert must never be a sanction.
On WhatsApp, the team can also block an abusive number: its messages are still recorded, so that a genuine report is not lost, but Funda no longer replies to it. Volume limits apply to each number.
8. Appeal a decision
Any moderation decision can be appealed from the notification that tells you about it. A person reviews it.
- You can make one appeal per sanction, explaining why in a few lines (1,000 characters at most).
- If the appeal is accepted, the sanction is lifted and the content comes back exactly as it was before the decision.
- The answer states its reasons. [À COMPLÉTER : délai de réponse à un recours]
- Deadline to appeal: [À COMPLÉTER : délai]
- If you no longer have access to the app: [À COMPLÉTER : e-mail de contact].
9. The record of decisions
All decisions, automatic or human, are entered in a record that cannot be rewritten: a corrected decision produces a new decision, and the old one remains visible. This record is what is consulted in the event of an appeal.
10. Contact
